Resources for Autism is a charity that was established to specifically to improve the lives of children, adults and their families, wherever they are on the autistic spectrum.
The Sunday Play Scheme in Abbey Street’s Beormund Community Centre offers various organised activities for children such as physical activities, arts and crafts, cooking etc. whilst the outdoor activities ranges from an outing to a park, going swimming or a visit to a museum.
Just before reopening in September, the Play scheme was told that it could no longer use the centre’s soft play equipment. The children (ages range from 8 – 13 years) and all diagnosed with high functioning autism, desperately required soft play equipment as part of their weekly activities. The funding from The Bermondsey Square Community Trust helped to provide the soft play equipment needed.
Without these services, the children would be unable to access such a range of fun activities, which are automatically part of their non-disabled peer’s lives. The activities also serve to help move the youngsters towards independence. At the same time, families gain a period of respite from their stressful responsibilities as carers.
Bullying and exclusion are, sadly, common features in the lives of these children. Resources for Autism provide environments where the children are accepted for who they are and given a chance to fulfil what for many is their greatest desire – to make a friend.
“Resources for Autism wishes to thank the Bermondsey Square Community Trust for funding the soft play equipment for the Sunday Southwark Play Scheme. We look forward to building a relationship with your Trust, so that your businesses see the positive help that has been provided to this local group.”
