In May 1940 the British Expeditionary Force and both French and Belgian forces were trapped on the beaches surrounding Dunkirk. A major operation was initiated to evacuate these troops known as Operation Dynamo.
One of the ‘little ships’ was London fireboat The Massey Shaw. She assisted in the evacuation of many troops and in the rescue of both sailors and soldiers from a sinking French warship.
To mark the 75th anniversary of Operation Dynamo, the Massey Shaw has once again made this heroic journey to Dunkirk with other surviving ‘little ships’.
To find out more, book a ticket for the next London Fire Brigade Museum evening lecture Operation dynamo: The little ships of Dunkirk.
Tickets are £10 (inc. lecture, refreshments and a chance to visit the museum) and must be booked in advance.
